Two questions decide a first setup: how do you drink it, and what will you spend on the pair. Every answer below is a grinder and a machine, grinder first, because that is the order the cup cares about. Pick the sentence that sounds like you.

"I want real espresso at home, and I'll learn"
Encore ESP + Bambino. The grinder reaches espresso fine, the machine has PID, 9 bar extraction, a real wand and both kinds of basket, and together they cost what a mid-range one-box machine does, with a grinder you can keep when you upgrade the machine.
Electric, 40 mm conical, stepped
Baratza Encore ESP
Baratza Encore ESP
The entry espresso grinder: Baratza's Encore with a finer first half of its dial, settings 1–20 for espresso and 21–40 for filter, a dosing cup in the box, and the maker's own words that it grinds "creamy, syrupy shots".

Hopper

Suits: The first grinder for a Bambino, Dedica or Gaggia; the one that makes a non-pressurized basket possible.
Weigh: Slow (1.3–2.2 g/s), plastic body, static on the cup. Stepped, so a shot that needs a half-step is a dose change instead. Baratza doesn't publish the weight.
The small machine that changed the entry level: hot in three seconds, PID temperature control, low-pressure pre-infusion then 9 bar, single-wall and dual-wall 54 mm baskets in the box, and a manual steam wand that makes real microfoam.

Suits: A small kitchen and a separate grinder. The machine most of this site assumes.
Weigh: Light, plastic-bodied, a tiny drip tray and no pressure gauge. No grinder; that is the point, and the budget.
"Mostly lattes, and I don't want to learn to steam"
Encore ESP + Bambino Plus. The same machine with an automatic wand: three temperatures, three textures, and it purges itself. The grinder still matters just as much under milk.
Thermojet, PID, automatic milk, 54 mm
Breville Bambino Plus
Breville BES500
The Bambino with an automatic steam wand: three temperatures, three textures, an auto-purge, a bigger tank, a two-year warranty, and the tamper, Razor, jug and cleaning disc in the box.

Suits: The latte drinker who wants the milk done while they do something else.
Weigh: Automatic milk is less controllable than manual for latte art, though the wand can be run by hand. Same small tray. A bundle with the Encore ESP is a separate listing.
Barista Express, or the Impress. Grinder and machine in one with PID and a gauge; the Impress adds dose correction and a 22 lb tamping lever. Know going in that the built-in grinder is the limit, and you can't swap it.
Thermocoil, PID, built-in grinder, 54 mm
Breville Barista Express
Breville BES870XL
The one-box starter that put espresso in a million kitchens: a thermocoil with PID, a built-in conical grinder with 16 settings and a half-pound hopper, a pressure gauge, a manual wand and 54 mm baskets of both kinds.

Suits: One purchase, one footprint, and a counter that has room for it.
Weigh: The built-in grinder is the weak link: coarse steps and retention, and you can't upgrade it without replacing the machine. One thermocoil means a wait between shot and steam. Heat-up time isn't published.
"I want the 58 mm machine I'll still have in ten years"
Eureka Specialità + Gaggia Classic Evo Pro. A brass boiler, a 9 bar OPV and a commercial-style wand, with every accessory in the standard size and a PID kit a weekend away. The Specialità is the grinder you buy once.

A lever press with no plug: you preheat the cylinder with kettle water, load 12–18 g, and pull the shot by hand against a gauge that shows the 9 bar zone. Cast aluminium and stainless, bottomless and flow-control portafilters in the box, three-year warranty.

Stilosa, with pre-ground. A real steam wand and pressurized baskets that work with supermarket espresso grind. It will tell you whether you want the hobby; when you do, the grinder is the next purchase and the Stilosa becomes the milk station.
The lowest-cost machine here with a real manual steam wand: a stainless boiler, a 15 bar pump, two pressurized "crema" filters, a one-litre tank and a 90-second warm-up.

Suits: Finding out whether you like making espresso before buying a grinder.

A 0.1 g scale with a timer and a tamper sized to your basket, from the tools page; they are what make the first recipe repeatable. Then dial in: 18 g in, 36 g out, 25 to 30 seconds, and turn the grinder, not the machine.
